Annika Neudecker - Creative Translations from English into German

“A translation is no translation unless it will give you the music of a poem along with the words of it.” — John Millington Synge

Mr. Synge was right. There’s an almost musical quality to words that flow nicely. A well-written source text or creative copy that actually deserves to be called “creative” can make a translator “all giddy” — literally. Why? Well, if you’re passionate about translating (like I am) you see possibilities — possibilities of doing full justice to the text you are about to translate.

As both a translator and a proofreader, I am aware that German translators can occasionally be guilty of taking a rather clinical approach to words. The resultant translation may fail to convey the message of the source text or may not capture the beauty of the original English.

Such translators are like people who pluck the cherries off the cake without getting to its chocolate core: they don’t try to read between the lines; they don’t go in search of that elusive perfect word; they don’t ponder the various meanings of a term at 2 AM in the morning; and they don’t play around with commas the way a toddler plays with coins. I’m like that toddler: I play with phrases and commas, and I will work on your German translation until it flows.

As a freelance translator, I work regularly for translation agencies, and have thus provided translations for a wide range of international clients in various fields. However, I’m always happy to translate for direct clients. There’s no need to use a translation agency as a go-between if you’d rather work with a freelance translator.

If you choose to have your German translation done by me, I’ll be your translator, proofreader and contact person. I’ll be the one answering your e-mails and phone calls.
